What local is worth

Four things being nearby actually changes.

Most of what you read about hiring local is sentiment. These four are practical, and they are the real case for picking someone nearby over the first ad.

  • You can show me, not describe it

    Half an hour in the workshop tells me more about what the site has to do than an hour of questions on a call. What people ring you about, what they get wrong, which job you want more of and which you would rather stop taking. That is where the words on the page come from.

  • The photos can be of your actual work

    A site full of stock photos of somebody else's warehouse reads exactly as it is. Being nearby makes real photos a small job rather than a production. A photographer at your place is NZ$640 for half a day, quoted as its own line so you decide.

  • Your map listing gets set up for where you really are

    A business in Beachlands that serves Howick, and a business in East Tamaki that serves all of Auckland, want their Google listing set up differently. Service area, categories and hours all get filled in with you rather than guessed, and the site and the listing say the same thing.

  • You can ring a person

    Not a help desk, not a ticket. 021 217 1760, and it is answered by the person who built the site. That matters most on the day something is wrong, which is the one day nobody wants to be filling in a form.

Where I actually go

Beachlands and Maraetai, Whitford, Clevedon and out to Kawakawa Bay, then over the hill to Howick, Bucklands Beach, Pakuranga, Highland Park, Botany, Flat Bush, Ormiston and East Tamaki. That is the half of Auckland I know without looking at a map, and it is the half where meeting in person is easy rather than a day out.

It is not a boundary. East Auckland is where I live, not the edge of the work. A build runs on a conversation, a link you open on your phone and a couple of calls, and none of that cares where you are. In Whangarei or Invercargill you get the same build for the same money, with a call instead of a visit.

What being here does mean is that there is a name and an address behind the invoice, and you can check in about a minute that both are real. That is not nothing when you are about to send a deposit to somebody you found in a search result.

The one page is a fixed price. The business website and the store are from prices, and what moves them is anything past the list on the card: more pages or products, a booking system, or stock and orders connected to another system. Need something between these, or bigger? We quote it as a fixed price, in writing, with the revision rounds spelled out. All prices are in New Zealand dollars, with no GST added. Tea Break Studio is not registered for GST, so no GST is charged on any price, quote or invoice.

    A family-owned powder coating and blasting shop in East Tamaki, part of Jaeco Industries. Their customers arrive on a phone with a photo of a part, so the quote form takes up to six photos and emails them to the shop from the business's own domain.

We can meet. I am in Beachlands and I come to you, whether that is a workshop in East Tamaki, a shop in Howick or a kitchen table in Maraetai. The first conversation has no quote attached to it and costs nothing. After that, most people find email and a link they can open on their phone is faster than another meeting, so we do it the way that suits you.
No. The quote is one fixed number for the work described, and driving to Botany or Flat Bush is not a separate line on it. What does go on the quote separately is anything that costs real money, a photographer or a stock photo licence for example, and you see those before you agree to anything.
Not at all. East Auckland is where I live, not who I work for. Builds run over email, a link you can open on your phone and a call or two, so a client in Hamilton or Dunedin gets exactly the same job. Being nearby is a convenience, not a requirement, and it does not change the price either way.
It helps, and the part that helps most is not the website. It is your Google Business Profile, set up properly, with the right categories, the right service area and hours that are actually true. That is included in a build, connected to the site, so the two agree with each other. What nobody can do is promise you a position in the results, and I am not going to be the one who does.
That is the normal situation, not the awkward one. Sometimes the answer is a photographer, which is NZ$640 for half a day at your place, edited and sized for the web, quoted as its own line. Sometimes the answer is that the site does not need photographs at all and is better made another way. Powder Pros had no photography for the hero or the finishes, so both are renders I made instead.
You either do it yourself, because the handover shows you how, or you email me. If you would rather it was never your job, care plans start at NZ$69 a month and include a set amount of small changes, done for you. You can also cancel one by email any time, and your site and accounts stay yours.
